What is Systemic Workplace Wellness™?

Systemic Workplace Wellness™ is a term we have adapted from the original concepts developed by the German-Canadian biologist and philosopher Ludwig von Bertalanfy (1901-1972). Systems theory has been applied to many areas of study but is now applied here to describe a novel way for companies, managers, and all workers to look at how they can interact not only to produce a better product but better people as well.

By taking a holistic view, systems theory attempts to explain how different parts of the system are interconnected and how they influence each other. Feedback loops, closed systems, and the role components in larger systems are key concepts that help elucidate this interconnectedness (Skyttner, 2005). Any group of two or more people becomes part of a system if connected in some way over a period of time. Therefore, workplace environments are not only composed of small workgroups but rather many interconnecting groups that are part of an even larger regional or company group. What has been missing is the understanding that company or corporate groups are influenced by and influence the larger national and international systems.

In a highly specialized world that often operates within silos of knowledge and skills, we believe that a broader approach is needed to bring financial efficiency, and personal health into the workplace. Systemic Workplace Wellness™ brings a dynamic and active system of awareness into the process versus static or passive methodologies. Parts interact with one another rather than independently. Interdependency does not mean losing specificity but enhances it no matter what the industry. The end output is a longer-lasting company because workers last longer.

The Systemic Workplace Wellness™ approach uses the family unit as the model to apply to workplace health. The concept of family workgroups has been used for years and, although useful, has not gone far enough in looking at the entirety of how these are integrated into the whole of the company and beyond. The whole is truly greater than merely a sum of the parts because each part is valued as unique and necessary but does not operate without an awareness of the whole. This is where efficient and appropriate communication becomes essential.
